Chapter 3: Coffee Chapter

Dear Diary:

It's been quite a while since I've dialed this number. When he moved away, I talked with him for maybe a week or so, but after that... I just kind of forgot about him for a while. I mean, obviously when the news broke about the NAVAL implant I remembered him, but I never even called to congratulate him. I think I thought about it, but it just kept slipping my mind whenever I was near the phone or had time. I'm really sad about that.

You know? I think I'll call him now.

Even after all this time, I still remembered the phone number. In the past... well... I'm not sure. I was going to say that in the past I'd have to pay the city for the super long distance phone call, or maybe I did some phone phreaking or something, but I can't really remember what I did. It's just weird; I remember that I talked to him on this very phone, but it's been so long. It's been so long.

I picked the phone up, but when I went to dial, I got a huge headache for a second. I figured it was the stress of connecting with an old friend, but there was a serious mental block with dialing the number. I just sat there, stuck in a daze until the off-hook tone brought me back into reality. I picked up the receiver and began to hang it up right as the Cheif walked into the room.

"So how did the call go?"

I sat there, having no response to give him.

"You haven't called him yet, have you?" Cheif Geordi gave me a look that was half-understanding, yet half-concerned.

"I'm sorry Cheif, it's just that whenever I go to pick up the phone and call, it's just... I don't know. It's just heavy on my head. It's been so long, and it's hard to re-connect with old friends sometimes, you know? Like, even when it's just business... I'm sorry. I'll do it."

The Cheif gave me one more frownsmiling look. "You know what? You just sit there. I'll go get you a cup of your favorite coffee, and then maybe you'll be all right. I know this is a big task for you, and I'm glad that you're willing to do it. Just relax, and everything'll be all right after coffee."

Normally I'd feel weird having my boss fetch coffee for me, but this time it just felt right. "You know the way I like it, right?"

"With extra maple syrup."

I don't recall telling him that. I suppose he didn't get that far up without knowing how to gather information though.

The coffee was good though.

I know this chapter could stand to be longer, and there's much more to tell, but this feels like a good cliffhanger spot, so I'm putting one here. Find out next time how good the coffee was.
